As General Secretary of the High Storrs Centralians Association for the last 18 years, I have become even more involved with the school.
I was at school in the war years, when Miss Battensby was our Headmistress. In those days, the 'A' form took School Certificate in 4 years, and jumped the 5th year to go into the 6th. I really wanted to teach PE etc. but it wasn't to be, and after a few months in the 6th I went to Business College, which has stood me in good stead all through my life, and I still go to The Fitness League, exercising to music. My favourite subjects were Maths, Music, French and Latin, and PE and the 'very new' Modern Dance, which was interpreting music in dance. In fact our form was the first in the school to do this, and we actually performed a ballet. I also used to play the piano for Assembly, and once entered an inter-school competition in Spoken Latin, but I didn't win. I remember the fun we had, going to Lincolnshire to help(?!!) the war effort, by working on the farms, potato picking, weeding etc. We would go to the Farming Camps for a week in the summer. In 1991, I traced most of my form and organised a '50 Years On' reunion at school in our first 1A form room, with caterers, so that we didn't waste precious talking time. |
